Everything You Need to Know About the Head of the Charles Regatta
The Head of the Charles Regatta puts the England in New England. Since 1965, the annual event has welcomed the best crew teams from around the world to compete in the ultimate two-day rowing competition on the Charles River. Here’s everything you need to know about the event.
What is the Head of the Charles Regatta?
A regatta is a sporting event consisting of a series of boat or yacht races. The Head of the Charles regatta focuses on rowing, sometimes referred to as “crew,” a sport which originated in ancient Egypt.
When is the Head of the Charles Regatta?
Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 2, 2019.
Where to Watch the Regatta
The course stretches across three miles along the Charles River. Visit one of the ten boat houses along the river, or one of the ticketed areas, such as the Eliot Bridge Enclosure Hospitality. Presented by Ason Martin, the tent will offer a gourmet buffet lunch from Ruth’s Chris Steak House, as well as an open bar with premium beers, wines, and soda.
Where to Park in Boston
Parking is limited, so if you’re able, do take public transportation. Free parking is available on the Birmingham Parkway, where there’s a shuttle to the FALS/Rowing and Fitness Expo area. There’s also a parking garage near the Alewife T Station, where you can take the metro to Harvard Square, which is just a short walk from the river and the Weld Exhibition/Reunion Village. The cost is $7 per day or $8 for overnight parking.
Things to Do at the Regatta
While the Eliot Bridge Enclosure offers a relaxed setting to view the races, the Weld Exhibition is the place to go for food, merchandise, and an energetic crowd. At the Rowing and Fitness Expo, which is at the finish line, you can be the first to know the winner and test out rowing machines for yourself.
